Ukraine Refuses to Renew Gas Transit Deal with Russia Amidst Ongoing Conflict

Ukraine's Decision to End Gas Transit Deal

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced on Monday that the gas transit agreement with Russia, scheduled to expire on January 1, 2025, will not be renewed. Shmyhal emphasized that Moscow is leveraging energy exports to fund the 'criminal war' against Ukraine.

Commitment to Europe's Energy Security

During a conversation with Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico, Shmyhal reaffirmed Kiev's dedication to serving as Europe's energy security guarantor and ensuring the 'uninterrupted supply of natural gas in winter.' He welcomed the 15th EU sanctions package against Russia, announced earlier today, and urged the bloc to maintain pressure on Moscow by targeting its energy sector revenue.

Impact on European Gas Supply

Despite the conflict that began in 2022, Russia continued to export natural gas to European countries via pipelines in Ukraine. Countries such as Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, and Moldova, which import Russian gas from Ukraine, could potentially be affected if the transit ceases.
