German Consul-General in Chennai, Michaela Küchler, highlights the appeal of Tamil Nadu to German investors. The state's advanced infrastructure, skilled workforce, and stable government are key factors attracting German companies. Currently, over 120 German companies operate in Tamil Nadu, with major sectors including automotive, machinery, IT, footwear, and insurance.
Notable German companies in Tamil Nadu include Daimler India Commercial Vehicles, BMW, Siemens, Schaeffler, and Schwing Stetter. The Consul-General also noted that more German companies are planning to establish manufacturing and service sector facilities in the region.
Attractive Factors and Future Prospects
Tamil Nadu's high level of education, availability of land, and active government support make it an attractive destination for German businesses. Sectors of interest include manufacturing, shipping, logistics, consumer electronics, power, green hydrogen, and semiconductors. Additionally, around 25 Tamil Nadu companies operate in Germany, reflecting a reciprocal business interest.
Looking ahead, there is potential for an official partnership between Tamil Nadu and the German state of Saxony, known for its strength in semiconductors. The Consul-General also expressed anticipation for the conclusion of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, which could further boost bilateral trade and investments.
