US Government to Implement New Export Controls on AI Chips
The US government is reportedly planning to implement new export control measures to prevent Chinese companies from acquiring advanced artificial intelligence (AI) chips through third-party countries, according to the South China Morning Post (SCMP). The measure, expected to be finalized by the end of December, will target the global shipment of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, which are essential for AI model training.
This move aims to close existing loopholes in current regulations and comes amid heightened trade war rhetoric following Donald Trump's election victory. President-elect Trump has stated his intention to toughen his stance against China to increase US competitiveness.
Meanwhile, China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) has recently opened a probe into Nvidia Corporation's business practices over alleged violations of the country's anti-monopoly regulations.
