Thailand's Generous Handout: $289 for Senior Citizens in January

Government's Stimulus Program: A Lifeline for the Elderly

Thailand's government is set to launch the second phase of its US$14 billion stimulus program in January, targeting senior citizens with a cash handout of 10,000 baht each. This initiative aims to boost consumption and support the elderly, who are in dire need of financial assistance.

The first phase of the program, launched in late September, has already disbursed payments to about a third of the 45 million eligible people. The upcoming phase will distribute 40 billion baht among 4 million people, focusing on those over 60 years old.

Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira emphasized the urgency of this support, stating, "We think this group is in need... and we can do it immediately." The cash transfers are expected to be completed by late January, just in time for the Lunar New Year.

In addition to the stimulus program, the government is also planning debt relief measures and housing support for low-income earners. These measures are part of broader efforts to revitalize the economy, which grew by 1.9% last year and is projected to expand by 2.6% this year.
